3 min read · Beginner · Updated 2026-10-21

In one sentence
Betting is entertainment with a cost, and there are clear warning signs and free places to get help.

Betting has a cost, and in practice most people lose. It can be entertainment with limits. It can also become a problem, and it usually starts quietly.

Warning signs

  • You stake more than you planned or for longer.
  • You raise the stake after losses to win them back.
  • You borrow, or use money meant for bills.
  • You hide the betting from your family or lie about it.
  • Betting is how you escape stress or sadness.
  • You cannot stop, or you get irritated when you are not betting.

Control tools

  • Deposit and time limits in your bookmaker account.
  • Temporary or permanent self-exclusion, which you request from the bookmaker.
  • Software that blocks betting sites on your device.
  • A limit you set before you bet, not while you bet.

Where to get help

Talk to someone you trust, and ask for professional help from a support service in your country. Our responsible gambling page lists helplines and organisations. Licensed bookmakers in Greece are supervised by the Hellenic Gaming Commission (ΕΕΕΠ), and you can check a company's licence on its website.
