Accumulators: why they cost more than they look

3 min read · Beginner · Updated 2026-10-21

In one sentence
Accumulators multiply both the odds and the risk, and the bookmaker margin multiplies too.

The accumulator is attractive because small odds become a big one. Four legs at 1.50 give 5.06. The same multiplication applies to the risk.

Probabilities multiply

For an accumulator to win, every leg has to win. If each has a 70% chance and the legs do not affect each other, the chance that all win is the product.

Chance that all legs win (70% each)1 ×70.0%2 ×49.0%3 ×34.3%4 ×24.0%5 ×16.8%6 ×11.8%
With six 70% legs the chance that all win is 11.8%, about one time in eight.

The margin multiplies too

Every leg contains the bookmaker's margin. In an accumulator the margins multiply. If each leg carries a 5% margin, the slip pays only (1 / 1.05)^N of the fair payout.

Share of the fair payout you keep (5% margin per leg)1 ×95.2%2 ×90.7%3 ×86.4%4 ×82.3%5 ×78.4%6 ×74.6%
With four legs the accumulator pays about 82% of its fair value.

When it makes sense

It is not forbidden. If you play a small amount for fun, an accumulator is a reasonable choice at the cost shown above. If you want long-term profit, single selections with positive EV, or accumulators with a few well-chosen legs, give away less in margin.

Watch correlation as well. Legs from the same match are not independent, and bookmakers price that into bet builders. See our combinations in the bet builders.

Work out the combined odds and probability in the accumulator calculator.

Check your understanding

1. Four independent 70% legs. How likely are all to win?
0.7^4 ≈ 24%.
2. With a 5% margin per leg, what share of the fair payout does a four-leg accumulator give?
(1 / 1.05)^4 ≈ 82%.
