A bankroll plan: units, limits and discipline

3 min read · Beginner · Updated 2026-10-21

In one sentence
Set a bankroll you can afford to lose, stake in units, and the size of each bet decides whether a bad run is survivable.

The bankroll is the amount you have set aside for betting and can afford to lose in full. It is not your salary or your rent. If it goes, your life does not change.

We stake in units

A unit is a fixed percentage of the bankroll, 1% in our system. A 2-unit tip is 2% of the bankroll, whatever that is. That lets you compare bets and past results without depending on euros.

Why stake size matters

Losses come in runs. Here is how much bankroll is left after 10 losses in a row, depending on how much you stake each time.

Bankroll left after 10 losses in a row1%90.4%2%81.7%5%59.9%10%34.9%20%10.7%
At 1% per bet you keep 90%. At 20% you keep just 11%, and you would need to multiply what is left by more than nine to rebuild.

A simple plan

  • Set the bankroll and do not top it up during the day.
  • Stake 0.5 to 2 units per bet, with a cap you do not exceed.
  • Set a loss limit per day and per week. When you hit it, you stop.
  • Do not raise the stake after losses. If you raise it, do it after months of good records and based on the bankroll.
  • Keep a log with date, market, odds, stake and result.
Example
Bankroll 500 euros. 1 unit = 5 euros. A 2-unit tip is 10 euros. If the bankroll grows to 600, the unit becomes 6. If it falls to 400, it becomes 4. The stake shrinks when you lose and grows when you win.
Next, how the Kelly formula derives the stake from your edge: Kelly.

Check your understanding

1. You stake 5% of the bankroll per bet and lose 10 in a row. About how much is left?
0.95^10 ≈ 60%.
2. What is 1 unit in our system?
We measure stakes as a share of the bankroll: 1 unit = 1%.
